What changes your MTB tire pressure?
Tire pressure is a balance between grip, support, comfort, rolling behaviour and protection against rim strikes or tire damage.
Total weight
More rider, bike and equipment weight generally requires more tire support.
Tire width
Wider tires provide more air volume and can generally be used at lower pressures than narrower tires.
Casing
Heavier and more supportive casings can provide additional sidewall and impact support.
Tubeless or tube
Tubeless systems remove pinch-flat risk from an inner tube and can generally be used at somewhat lower pressures.
Tire inserts
Inserts can add rim protection and sidewall support, potentially allowing a lower pressure starting point.
Terrain
Rough impacts may require more protection while wet conditions often reward more compliance and grip.

Why is rear MTB tire pressure usually higher than front?
The rear wheel commonly carries more of the bike-and-rider load and also sees substantial drive and impact loads.
For that reason, the calculator estimates front and rear pressure separately instead of returning one PSI value for both tires.
Different tire widths or casings front and rear can further change the ideal pressure split.

Tubeless vs inner tubes: how does pressure change?
Tubeless MTB tires eliminate the inner tube and therefore remove the traditional tube pinch-flat mechanism.
This commonly allows riders to experiment with somewhat lower pressures for more grip and compliance, provided the tire remains supported and secure on the rim.
With inner tubes, slightly more pressure may be useful to reduce pinch-flat risk.
How tire casing affects MTB tire pressure
Two tires with the same width can behave very differently because casing construction changes sidewall and impact support.

Should you lower pressure with a tire insert?
Tire inserts can provide extra rim protection and support inside the tire. This can give riders more room to experiment with lower pressures.
But an insert does not make pressure irrelevant. Too little air can still lead to excessive tire roll, burping, poor handling or tire damage.
Use inserts as added support, not as permission to run arbitrarily low pressure.
Should you lower MTB tire pressure in wet conditions?
A modest pressure reduction can increase tire deformation and contact with slippery terrain, potentially improving grip.
The trade-off is reduced casing support and rim protection. Make small changes rather than dramatically reducing pressure.
